I offer private lessons to students of all ages, on a variety of subjects. These include:
viola performance (intermediate to advanced students ages 8-18, beginner to advanced adults)
As a member of the viola faculty of The Juilliard School Pre-College Division for over ten years, I also offer private, one hour lessons to highly motivated students interested in auditioning for a Pre-College program at Juilliard or elsewhere, or in developing their viola skills for chamber music, orchestral, or other ensemble playing. Adult amateurs are always a very welcome addition to my teaching schedule.
composition/ theory (beginner to advanced, all ages)
I give weekly, private hour-long lessons to composers of all levels of experience interested in expanding their palette of compositional choices. Topics include the study of theory, counterpoint, harmony, orchestration, and contemporary music techniques.
improvisation (intermediate to advanced, all ages)
Adapted from my workshops at Mark O'Connor's Strings Conferences, these sessions are offered to violin or viola players who already have at least basic fluency on their instrument, but are interested in developing their ability to play without written music, these lessons are designed to address each student's specific goals for adding elements of improvisation to their performance skills.
violin performance (intermediate students ages 8-18, beginner to advanced adults)
Although I specialize in the viola, the violin is my first instrument, and I've been performing on it publicly for over thirty years. Offered to students who have already learned the fundamentals of how to hold the instrument, I offer continuing instruction on violin technique and musicianship. Adult amateurs also very welcome.
music appreciation (adult)
A basic understanding of the history and aesthetics of classical music can be as valuable in the business world as being able to fill a foursome on the golf course. A date night at the opera or symphony can change from a bewildering duty to an enjoyable experience with a little guidance. These private, informal 30 min - one hour sessions are designed, with the aid of listening and reading recommendations, to help adults interested in finding out what all the fuss over classical music is, and how it's actually not too far removed from other, more contemporary modes of musical enjoyment.
All lessons are conducted at my home studio in Brooklyn, unless otherwise arranged. Please contact me directly using the following form to discuss rates.
